2020 | What do disability support organisations believe about Positive Behaviour Support?

Presented by Brent Hayward in conjunction with the Association for Positive Behaviour Support Australia (APBSA), 13 October 2020

What is this webinar about?

Despite the increasing promotion of positive behaviour support (PBS) in intellectual disability services and the NDIS, few studies have considered PBS policy. This webinar describes the examination of PBS policies from non-government organisations to uncover policy beliefs about PBS. The results suggest that beliefs about PBS vary among non-government organisations, with the values and attitudes of PBS shared more than the nature of PBS support. Thirteen core beliefs were identified, some of which are not supported by evidence. We also argue that PBS policy was being used as a surrogate to promote the use of restrictive interventions. These findings suggest that PBS in Australian disability services requires attention to its most basic assumptions if organisations wish to deliver the outcomes to people with intellectual disability they promise.
