Better Communication Webinar Series - Part 3

Communication and self-advocacy under the NDIS:
A Self Advocate’s Lived Experience

This webinar will present the experience and views of Sarah, a self-advocate who has 3 years’ experience of speaking up for herself with the NDIS. During this presentation, Sarah will talk about what it is like to be a self-advocate within the NDIS system, the skills required and how she prefers to be supported.

Then drawing from her own experiences, she will talk about how to communicate with the NDIA, and the steps you can take if your initial plan is not what you need. How she successfully appealed her plan at the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) will be presented.

Presented by Sarah Butler

Sarah is a 34 year old self-advocate with a great interest in research and presenting.  She has had NDIS funding for 3 years, and during this time has had to overcome planning difficulties to get a plan to match her needs. She has resolved these problems through plan reviews and successfully taking the NDIS to the AAT.

She will be supported during the presentation by Bernadette Curryer, an ASID Board Director and Sydney Universityy PhD candidate, currently researching self-determination of adults with intellectual disability wthin family relationships.

The webinar will be recorded and made available to all people who register including those unable to participate in the live event.
