Annual Awards

ASID has annual awards.  These are for  

  • Being good at research
  • Volunteering for ASID over a long time

These awards are not a type of membership.  

ASID Awards are presented at the Australasian Conference, by the President of ASID.

ASID members  can put up  one or more people for the following awards.

People who got awards

Distinguished Service Award

This award is for individuals who have done things for the organisation over a long time. The Distinguished Service award is given to people who are ASID members and have made an Exceptional and long term contribution to ASID ( at least 3 years), This has been through

  • Being on the board
  • Contributing to the Divisions of ASID
  • Convening ASID events
  • Editing ASID publications

A Director of ASID cannot get this award.

Fellow of ASID

The award may be given to an individual ASID member because of their exceptional and long contribution (at least 7 years) to intellectual disability.  A Director of ASID cannot get this award.

The award is because the member has given their time and energy to the area of intellectual disability. They gave it in one or more of the following ways;

  • Research
  • Service provision (including service development or improvement, administration),
  • Advocacy and/or self-advocacy,
  • Professional practice, and
  • Teaching and staff training.

Individual members who are awarded the title Fellow of ASID (FASID)  can write it after their name. For example, Patricia Smith (FASID).

Media Award

The ASID media award recognises people in the media who have made positive change happen for people with intellectual disabilities. This might be increasing positive awareness of people with intellectual disability.

Media is defined as a tool of communication, which can be in many forms including: writing, photos, films, and the spoken word.
The award will not be given if the media person is advertising in order to make money.
