Welcome to ASID, the Australasian Society for Intellectual Disability, linking research to practice, serving members across Australia and New Zealand

There are many benefits for members of ASID, including:

  • Membership of a strong and active association comprising people working or studying in the area of intellectual disability, people with an intellectual disability and their families or carers.
  • Membership of a regional association which meets on a regular basis to pursue issues of local, national or international relevance.
  • Annual conferences hosted by each regional association featuring keynote addresses from leading international speakers.
  • Locally organised regional conferences, seminars, workshops and social gatherings.
  • Opportunities to hear touring international and national experts sponsored by the Society.
  • Opportunities to meet and exchange ideas with people having similar interests in other parts of your region and the country.
  • Opportunity, through a united society, to influence developments in the area of intellectual disability.
  • Quarterly issues of the Journal of Intellectual and Developmental Disability which has an international readership and contributorship.
  • Quarterly issues of the society's magazine, Intellectual Disability Australasia, which includes articles of general interest and contributions from regional associations .
  • Opportunity to join various networks within ASID which pursue areas of special interest.

Categories Of Membership

Any person or organisation who subscribes to the aims and objectives of ASID is eligible to join. In order to meet varying needs, the Society maintains four membership categories. These are: Organisational, Full, Associate and Student.

Organisational membership:

  • Includes subscriptions to the Journal of Intellectual and Developmental Disability and two copies of Intellectual Disability Australasia, discounts for publications and for up to two staff attending conferences and other ASID events. Organisational members also receive membership of ASID Forum, access to online research databases and are entitled to two votes at any General Meeting. Organisational Members may nominate a representative for membership of regional councils, but these representatives are ineligible to be elected to any executive position (eg President, etc) within the society or as an Australasian Delegate.
  • Annual Subscription: $270AUD (inc GST); $300 NZD     Download Membership Form/Invoice

Full Membership:

  • Includes subscriptions to the Journal of Intellectual and Developmental Disability and Intellectual Disability Australasia (and online access ), member discounts at conferences and publications, access to online research databases and membership of ASID Forum. Full members are eligible to vote and be elected to any position (eg President, etc) within the society, including all executive positions and as a Delegate to the Australasian Board.
  • Annual Subscription: $135 AUD (inc GST); $150 NZD    Download Membership Form/Invoice

Associate Membership:

  • Includes member discounts at conferences and publications, access to online research databases,  a subscription to Intellectual Disability Australasia and membership of ASID Forum. Associate members may nominate for membership of a regional council, but are ineligible to be elected to any executive position (eg President, etc) within the society or as an Australasian Delegate.
  • Annual Subscription: $68 AUD (inc GST); $75 NZD     Download Membership Form/Invoice

Student Membership:

  • Student membership is available to full-time students preparing for a career in disabilities. It includes subscriptions to the Journal of Intellectual and Developmental Disability (and online access) and Intellectual Disability Australasia, discounts at conferences and for publications, access to online research databases and membership of ASID Forum. Student members may nominate for membership of a regional council, but are ineligible to be elected to any executive position (eg President, etc) within the society or as an Australasian Delegate
  • Annual Subscription: $75 AUD (inc GST); $83 NZD      Download Membership Form/Invoice

How To Join

If you wish to join ASID, please follow these simple steps:

  1. Choose the membership category which best meets your needs.
  2. Select and download the appropriate membership Invoice. 
  3. Complete the membership application.
  4. Send the completed application  enclosing the appropriate annual fee (which will entitle you to 12 months membership from the time of application) to:
